NACOGDOCHES CO., April 29, 2014-- Nacogdoches County Deputies were involved in a shooting with a Cherokee county man on a traffic stop in Cushing, Texas, on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.
At or about 10:59 p.m., a Cushing ISD school resource officer conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle after observing the vehicle on the Cushing ISD campus. The vehicle attempted to elude the officer, but he was able to catch up with it and stop the vehicle on Highway 204, at 6th Street. Two Nacogdoches County Deputies were in the area of Cushing at the time and responded as a backup unit. Both units had just completed a criminal mischief call on School property near the ball park.
The vehicle that was stopped was occupied by three male subjects. Cushing ISD officer was making contact with the driver of the vehicle while the deputies with NCSO were at the rear of the vehicle watching the other two suspects inside the motor vehicle.
During the traffic stop, the front seat passenger unexpectedly exited the vehicle with a shotgun in his hand and turned toward the two deputies that were at the rear of the vehicle. Deputies immediately instructed the suspect to put the weapon down repeated times. The suspect replied back no and then pointed the shotgun at deputies.
At that time, Deputies were in fear of their life of being shot and killed by the suspect. Deputies then engaged the suspect after he continued to point a shotgun at them. Deputies ended the armed confrontation and the male was taken into custody. Deputies and first responders attempted lifesaving efforts for the suspect, in an effort to assist with gunshot wounds. Upon County Emergency Medical personal arrival on scene, it was determined the suspect had subsided to the injuries occurred during the armed confrontation. Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 arrived on scene and pronounced the suspect deceased.
The Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers was summoned to the scene for investigation and is still under their authority to investigate the shooting death.
It was discovered on scene that the suspect had made numerous comments in the last several days that he was going to kill a police officer. It was also learned through numerous tattoos on the suspect’s body that the suspect has active ties with a white supremacist hate group.
Deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave with pay until the investigation is completed by Texas DPS Rangers. The Nacogdoches County Sheriff Office is also conducting an internal investigation into the shooting.
The suspect has been identified as Darrell Joseph Legnon, 25 years of age. Legnon has an extensive criminal history and has been made a previous confession to law enforcement that he was an Aryan Brotherhood gang member.
Legnon was currently out on bond for two counts of aggravated robbery in Cherokee County and an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle charge.
