TYLER, March 30, 2013—Mission Tejas State Park, which is located on Hwy 21 between Alto and Crockett, will host many family-friendly events during the month of April.
April 13, Mission Tejas invites families to enjoy a “Tour of the Park.” A Ranger led tour of park features including the Rice Family Log Home, El Camino Real and the Mission Replica. The history of Texas State Parks & Mission Tejas State Park will also be discussed. Participants should meet at 10:00 a.m., at the Rice Family Log Home.
On April 14, the Friends Group of Mission Tejas will meet at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend. If you love the outdoors, East Texas history, nature or all of the above you will love being a part of this group of dedicated supporters. This is the last meeting before the Folk Festival on April 20, so please don’t miss it.
On April 20, Mission Tejas will host a Folk Festival, a wonderful day of East Texas history and folklore from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. This event will feature historical re-enactors including Buffalo Soldiers, a one room school house, Texas Top Guns with a Wild West shootout and their genuine Chuck Wagon serving up great grub. Demonstrators in period dress will be depicting early life Texas, blacksmithing, spinning, lace making, and quilting. Civil War and Indian War Soldiers exhibits and other presenters will show all manner of daily life in the early days of Texas. Sit on the porch of the Rice Home and let the sweet sounds of dulcimer music take you back in time. Park entry fees are waived for this event. There will be a silent auction benefiting the Friends of Mission Tejas State Park. Call 936-687-2394 with any questions or if you would like to be a demonstrator.
On April 27, Mision Tejas will host a Fishing Tournament. New anglers and children will learn the basics of angling and fishing education. A fishing tournament will follow with prizes for the most successful fishermen and women. Poles, bait and tackle will be available or you may bring your own. Regular park entry fees apply, ($2.00 for all 13 yrs and older), there is no fee for the fishing tournament.
