Mission Tejas offers family activities in June

ALTO, May 21, 2013--Mission Tejas State Park has plenty of exciting events and family-fun opportunities planned for the month of June. The June park schedule is as follows:

JUNE 1, 2013:  GRAND TRAIL OPENING -  Join us for the ribbon cutting of our new trail system and a guided hike.  The new trails provide 5 additional miles of trail to our existing trail system.  Meet at The Mission Replica at 10 a.m. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and bring bottled water. 

JUNE 8, 2013:  HISTORIC SITES TOUR -  This tour will include the historic features of the park, The Rice Family Log Home, The Mission Replica and a walk along El Camino Real. Tour begins at 10 a.m., at The Rice Home.

JUNE 15, 2013:  FROM GARDEN TO KITCHEN - A look at the pioneer garden – what crops they might have grown, agricultural practices and how things have changed. Then, get out the Dutch Oven and see what can be cooked up.  11 a.m. until 1p.m., at The Rice Log Home.

JUNE 22, 23, 2013:  CCC WEEKEND - Join us to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Co. 888 of the Civilian Conservation Corps.  June 22, from 10 a.m., discussion will be about the CCC’s work at Mission Tejas and the work of the CCC as a whole.  Lots of fun, hands on activities for kids and interesting history suitable for all ages.  Meet at The Pavilion. On June 23, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., join for a hike through the park and visit each of the CCC features.  Highlights of the life and work of the CCC will take place during the hike.  Kids and pets (on a leash) are welcome.  Be sure to wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring plenty of drinking water. Meet at The Pavilion.

JUNE 29, 2013:  MOUND BUILDERS & TRADERS-THE CADDO PEOPLE - A presentation of the first inhabitants of Mission Tejas:  The Caddo were the first people the Spanish encountered in East Texas.  This program will look at the rich cultural history of the Caddo people and how they lived.  Presentation begins at 10 a.m., at The Pavilion.

All park events are free. However, there is a $2.00 park entry fee for all those 13 years of age and over. Mission Tejas is located on Hwy 21, between Alto and Crockett, in Weches.
