JASPER, May 12, 2013-- The Area Agency on Aging of Deep East Texas and 2-1-1 Texas will be celebrating May as Older Americans Month with their “Mayfest” on Thursday, May 16. The day will include a health fair, games of “42”, bingo, entertainment and lunch. Mayfest will be held at Lufkin’s Pitser Garrison Civic Center from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The theme for this year’s Mayfest is “Unleashing the Power of Aging by Grooving Back to the 70’s” with participants being encouraged to start their day with a walkathon, sponsored by Adult Protective Services, that begins at 9:00 a.m., from Regions Bank, 203 S. First Street. A health fair and entertainment begins at 10:00 a.m., at the civic center. Games of “42” and bingo will start shortly thereafter. Lunch will be provided for those involved in the activities. The day’s program will wrap up with entertainment. “This is one of the most important events of the calendar year for DETCOG and we encourage caregivers and seniors to come out and enjoy this day of Mayfest in East Texas,“ says DETCOG Executive Director, Walter G. Diggles, Sr.
Over five-hundred people participated in last year’s Mayfest and even more people are expected this year. Anyone with questions about the event is encouraged to contact Donna Sprouse at 800-256-6848 or 409-384-7614.
