Man dies hours after arrest for Public Intoxication

ANDERSON CO., March 19, 2013--On Saturday, March 16, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a suspicious person at Kim’s convenience store in Elkhart.

When Deputy Jeff Taylor arrived, he found a man, later identified as 50 year-old Jeffrey Malachi Eastman, wandering around the store and looking in the windows. When questioned, the Eastman claimed he was there to pick up his wife, even though the store was closed at the time. Deputy Taylor believed the Eastman to be intoxicated due to his erratic behavior, and called EMS. When Emergency personnel arrived, the man refused all medical treatment.

Eastman was taken into custody and transferred to Anderson County Jail, where he was booked in on the charge of Public Intoxication.

Several hours later, a little before 7 a.m., Eastman was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where he later passed away.

An autopsy has been ordered. Detective Ronnie Foster has been named the lead investigator for this case, and will be assisted by Texas Ranger Rudy Flores.
