LONGVIEW, June 21, 2013-- The City of Longview will be considering a plan to simplify recycling and trash collection. The goal of the simplified collection proposal is to increase recycling participation while also reducing the long-term cost of trash collection. Prior to consideration of the proposal by City Council, residents are encouraged to learn more.
The plan would simplify the current collection system to a same day pickup for both recycling and trash. Currently, customers can place trash curbside twice each week and then place curbside on a separate day once each week. With the new plan, residents would place both recycling and trash curbside on the same day once each week. In addition, all residential customers would receive a free 95-gallon cart for recycling and a free 95-gallon cart for trash if they desired. The carts would not be required for use.
The proposed plan would also allow greater efficiency of collection. Currently, the City of Longview operates 12 trucks each day, but only 8 trucks would be needed each day under the proposed plan. The plan also includes replacing the city’s current fleet with trucks that are capable of side-arm cart collection.
In the proposal, residential sanitation charges would remain unchanged at $14.95 per month. However, if the City of Longview chose to instead continue with the current twice-a-week trash collection, the Sanitation Department would request a $1 per month rate increase. The proposal will be considered as part of the City’s budget process in July and August. If approved, the changes would likely take effect sometime in 2014.
According to Sanitation Manager Dwayne Archer, “Over the years, we have continued to see our recycling rates rise, but they are not yet as high as we would like them to be. With the addition of 95-gallon recycling carts for every household, we hope that will make it even easier for customers to recycle larger amounts. We also believe that the increased efficiency would help us maintain a low rate for customers.”
Residents are encouraged to attend informational meetings to learn about the proposal and ask questions. The meetings will be held at City Hall at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 27; Tuesday, July 9; and Thursday, July 25. In addition, a question and answer session will be held on Facebook.com/CityofLongview on Thursday, July 18 from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
