TYLER, May 8, 2013-- The Fit City Coalition is proud to announce their new event titled, “Lighten Up & Play,” taking place Saturday, May 18, at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Family-friendly activities will be held on the field beginning at 9:00 a.m., followed by the announcement of Lighten Up East Texas awards at 11:00 a.m.
“The Lighten Up & Play event is a wonderful way to merge what the kids are learning at school in their 5-2-1-0 program and what the adults are striving for in the Lighten Up East Texas Challenge,” says George Roberts, Chief Executive Officer of NET Health and Co-Chair of Fit City. “It’s all about living an active and healthy life.”
Lighten Up East Texas is a regional weight loss challenge, created by the Fit City Coalition, in which individuals, teams and communities have competed to lose weight and improve their health. Participants received entries into a grand prize drawing for every 5 percent of weight lost, tracked from an official weigh-in at the start and the official weigh-out at the end of the challenge.
Donated by Allen Samuels Tyler, the grand prize is a new 2013 Dodge Dart. Other great prizes include four $1,000 Brookshire’s gift cards, a $5,000 Travel Masters/Fit City dream vacation, annual memberships and massage packages at ETMC Olympic Center, and hotel gift certificates.
"Our goal for this event is to encourage East Texans to take control of their health, to make smart and healthy choices, to make time for physical activity and to ultimately lose weight in a healthy way," says Mr. Roberts.
“When we established the Fit City Challenge in 2010, our mission statement was to make Tyler a Fit City one step, one bite and one health-conscious decision at a time,” said Dave Berry, Editor of the Tyler Morning Telegraph and Fit City Co-Chair. “We’ve seen much success from individuals and groups through the Lighten Up East Texas Challenge and are excited about seeing the results of those participating. We look forward to awarding great prizes and recognizing individuals who have adopted a healthier lifestyle and taken off unhealthy pounds.”
“Obesity is a significant health concern in East Texas,” said Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass. “We are not content to sit idle while our family members, friends and neighbors fight this battle alone. With the Lighten Up East Texas program we are joining together to get healthier as a community.”
In addition to Brookshire’s, Allen Samuels Tyler and Lighthouse Graphics, platinum sponsors for Lighten Up East Texas are the City of Tyler, NET Health and the Tyler Morning Telegraph. Other major sponsors of Lighten Up East Texas are Tyler ISD, KYTX CBS19, R.W. Fair Foundation, Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics, UT Health Northeast, Texas Spine and Joint Hospital, Travel Masters, Tyler ISD Foundation and East Texas Medical Center. Additional sponsors include AT&T, Ingersoll Rand, East Texas Food Bank, Goodwill, PECAT – “Live Tobacco Free”, Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and Tyler Junior College.
