Keep Tyler Beautiful hosts Trash-Off

TYLER, April 3, 2013--Keep Tyler Beautiful (KTyB) is encouraging people of all ages to demonstrate their love for the community by volunteering for the 2013 Great American Cleanup and Texas Trash-Off on Saturday, April 6, at 9 a.m. at Tyler’s Southside Park.

Volunteers are asked to register starting at 8:30 a.m. at the picnic pavilion and playground at Southside Park on South Donnybrook Avenue (just south of Shiloh Road). From there, teams of volunteers will spread out to clean up this popular family park.

Ark-La-Tex Shredding is offering free personal document shredding. Nestlé/Ozarka in Hawkins is donating bottled water and T-shirts; Chick-Fil-A is donating chicken sandwiches; Starbucks Coffee is bringing coffee for early risers and Tyler Golf Carts is donating the use of two golf carts to help with organizing the effort.  Target has donated reusable bags that will be given out to the first 100 people to register. Pyramid Homes is helping out with the use of a utility four-wheeler to haul trash.

There will also be drawings for door prizes donated by area businesses.

“The cleanup is a wonderful opportunity for sports teams, clubs, families, social groups, and individuals to get involved in their community and enjoy each other’s company while experiencing our great outdoors” said Keep Tyler Beautiful Board Chair Phyllis Carlyle.

In 2012, more than 100 volunteers took part in this event collecting nearly 4,000 pounds of litter and debris.

The Great American Cleanup takes place across the country throughout the months of March, April and May. Coupled with the Don’t Mess with Texas Trash Off, an anticipated 1,200 Keep America Beautiful (KAB) affiliates and participating organizations will bring together an estimated 3.8 million volunteers to clean up cities and states.

In what continues to be part of the nation’s largest grassroots community improvement program, KTyB volunteers will clean up litter and debris from Rose Rudman Park and Mud Creek. This is a great opportunity to encourage civic engagement and action.
