TYLER, November 14, 2013-- John Tyler High School is now offering English language classes for parents and interested adults in the community. Classes are held at the John Tyler campus, located at 1120 North Northwest Loop 323, on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The class consists of 30 lessons designed to address general English literacy concepts and certain specific topics.
English literacy concepts include basic grammar and syntax, nouns, articles, adjectives, prepositions, sentence structure and more. Specific topics include:
U.S. Naturalization Test - content needed to pass the test and become a United States citizen;
School Affairs – vocabulary and conversation skills needed to communicate with teachers and to understand academic information provided by the school;
Housekeeping – vocabulary of names and usage of household items and basic conversational skills related to those items;
Public Places – common or basic expressions necessary to understand and communicate ideas shared in public places such as stores, offices and hospitals.
Lessons are taught by John Tyler teachers with assistance from John Tyler students. Students assist the teachers by helping the adult students with interpretation as needed, as well as helping to provide conversational practice and individual instruction to reinforce the lesson. Adult students can join the program anytime through December.
“We are still in the beginning phases of the English classes,” John Tyler Assistant Principal Raul Benitez said. “Parents who attend the classes see it as an opportunity to better connect with our school while learning English. Additionally, our English instructors will assist parents in using school library computers when the lesson structure allows for it.”
