Jacksonville wins 2nd annual Tomato Thowdown

JACKSONVILLE, June 11, 2014— The trophy was awarded to Jacksonville, Texas during the 2nd Annual Tomato Throwdown in Shreveport, La. KTBS TV station was the location of the friendly but serious tomato challenge. The challenge was who has the biggest, best plate of 3 and the best tasting tomatoes. In the end, Jacksonville was named winner of this year’s Throwdown.

Crystal Springs, MS, and Jacksonville, TX, both have a Tomato Fest in June. Jacksonville’s event will be held this weekend, June 13, while Crystal Springs, MS festival is held the last Saturday in June, which will be June 28.

Both communities have a long history of growing tomatoes. In fact, Crystal Springs, MS, back in 1896, had a couple of farmers who were working for the railroad in Tyler, TX, who encouraged a couple of farmers to start growing tomatoes here in Jacksonville.

The Tomato Throwdown trophy will be proudly displayed during the 30th Annual Tomato Fest in Jacksonville, this Saturday, June 14. The best tasting tomatoes will be available at the farmer’s market and 5 varieties of salsas will be available as well.
