JACKSONVILLE, February 10, 2014-- The 10th Annual Job Shadowing Day, hosted by the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce’s Adopt-a-School Committee, was held on Thursday, February 06, 2014.
This yearly event is dedicated to giving high school juniors and seniors from JISD a half-day job shadowing experience, which enables the students to shadow a workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal morning on the job, showing the students how the skills they have developed in school can be utilized in the workplace.
Students arrived at Jacksonville businesses around 8:30 a.m., where they shadowed local business men and women, and caught a glimpse of career fields such as cosmetology, real estate, the medical industry and more. The students then arrived at the Norman Activity Center at 11:00 a.m., where the Baptist Theological Seminary, Jacksonville College, Stephen F. Austin University, and Tyler Junior College of Nursing had booths set up for a college fair and luncheon that followed.
Kim Stacy, who started this event, was the Master of Ceremonies at the luncheon. The students and guests dined on Little Ceasars pizza and cookies provided by Laurie Brown- Cookie Company, while special guest speaker, Randy McCown, from the M & H Crates, gave a particularly motivating speech to the students about his Jacksonville roots and challenging themselves to pursue their endeavors.
This event was organized under the guidance of Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce Chairwoman of the Board, Kris Sturrock, the Chamber’s Education Development Division Chair, Pam Anderson, and Adopt-a-School Committee Co-Chair Vance Royon and the following Adopt-A-School Committee Members: Julie Robinson, Patsy McLeod, Susan Phillips, Tam Nannen, Cheryl Adamson, Judy Terry, Janis Adams and Pamelia Adams.
