HENDERSON CO., July 30, 2013--On July 27, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputies assisted Eustace Police Department in a vehicle pursuit in which the drier, later identified as Casey Daniel Smith, backed into a Eustace Police Department vehicle and began evading officers who were in the vehicle.
At one point during the pursuit, Smith stopped the vehicle and Smith’s wife, Brandi Smith, who was a passenger in the vehicle, fled on foot but was later apprehended and taken into custody. Brandi Smith was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Evading Arrest.
The vehicle being driven by Casey Smith was found to have been stolen minutes earlier from a business in Mabank.
Smith continued to evade officers in the vehicle and later fled on foot. Tracking dogs were brought in to search for Smith, but police were unable to locate him.
Approximately two hours later, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jody Sorrells was dispatched to a robbery at a residence on CR 2919, less than a quarter mile from the last place Smith had been seen.
Henderson County Investigators Wisk Gabbard and John Long were called to assist Deputy Sorrells and learned that an 82 year-old, white female had arrived home to find her residence had been ransacked. The female advised she was then confronted by a white male, later identified as Smith, who requested to use her cell phone, and for her to give him a ride. The woman refused and was struck to the ground by Smith. After assaulting the female, Smith reportedly stole her vehicle and cell phone, and fled.
Investigator John Long obtained an arrest warrant for Casey Daniel Smith from Henderson County Justice of the Peace Milton Adams, for the offense of Aggravated Robbery.
Eustace Police were working on arrest warrants related to Smith’s evading and assault on a peace officer. Smith also had an active felony warrant issued out of Kaufman County for a felony Probation Violation related to a previous Methamphetamine-related arrest.
Investigators continued effort to locate Smith. On Sunday, Investigators were advised by the Garland Police Department that Smith was contacted by law enforcement at a WalMart in Garland, and was fatally wounded.
The car which belonged to the 82 year-old Henderson County robbery victim, was recovered in the WalMart parking lot.
