Grapeland Fire Department, EMS to host blood drive with Carter BloodCare

GRAPELAND, July 9, 2013-- Summer is the most challenging season to maintain the community blood supply. Donors are fewer in number and the need for blood by local hospitals is higher than usual. Every 90 seconds, a local patient within the Carter BloodCare service area requires a blood transfusion. Giving blood often is the best way to maintain a quality and sufficient local blood supply. Whole blood donors may give every 56 days and friends and family are invited, too.

Grapeland Fire Department & EMS is hosting a blood drive on Wednesday, July 17, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at 126 South Oak, in the parking lot. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact Chastity La Blanc at 936-545-5452 or 936-687-2187.

Blood donors giving this month can visit the great rewards page on carterbloodcare.org to redeem a gift certificate for a free pint of Blue Bell ice cream. Plus, all donors will be entered to win other delicious prizes. For details, visit www.BackyardRewards.org.

Potential blood donors can volunteer beginning at age 16 with a parent’s consent, and 17-year-olds can give independently. There is no upper age limit for giving. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID each time they donate. It’s also a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood. For more information about donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call Carter BloodCare at 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
