Garden Lecture focuses on spring vegetables

TYLER, March 30, 2013-- Veteran Master Gardener Harvey Collen will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the “Green Thumbs” garden club that meets monthly at the Tyler Senior Center.

Collen is expected to lecture about spring vegetable gardening April 1, at 1 p.m., at 1915 Garden Valley Road. She works with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, 1517 W. Front St., and specializes in vegetable production and growing techniques. Master Gardeners are specially trained volunteers who provide plant expertise to the public.

“The ‘Green Thumbs’ is a new group we’ve started and the response has been very positive,” said Kay Odom, Tyler senior center supervisor.  “There is a lot of interest in gardening and we’re happy to provide expert advice on some of the topics seniors find interesting.”

Future topics are expected to focus on bee keeping, composting and conserving water. The club meets at 1 p.m., the first Monday of every month and there is no fee to join. For more information, contact the Senior Center at 903-597-0781.
