PALESTINE, June 25, 2013--The Palestine YMCA Piranhas hosted their second annual swimming meet and the first regular meet of the season this past Saturday, at the Palestine Aquatic Center for 180 athlete members of the East Texas Summer Swim League (ETSSL).
The Piranhas competed against the Megladons from Athens, Ambush from Lufkin and Nacogdoches, and the Titans from Tyler.
Ten-year-old swimmers Kacie Kimbrough and Chase Fields took the spotlight with first place in every individual event they entered. They both swam 25 yard freestyle (14.38 and 15.20), 25 yard breaststroke (20.44 and 21.57), 25 yard butterfly (16.82 and 18.08), and 100 yard individual medley, which is 25 yards each of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle (1:23.0 and 1:27.57) . They joined brother and sister Braedan and Savanna Harris to win the 100 mixed 9-10 medley relay (1:20.96).
New to the team this year, seven-year-old Braedan placed first overall in 25 yard backstroke (23.66). Other Piranhas who garnered blue ribbons overall were eleven-year-old Madison Crader in 50 yard breaststroke (39.54) and fifteen-year-old Devon Edwards in 50 yard freestyle (25.33) and 50 yard backstroke (31.52).
Edwards anchored the winning 200 yard, mixed, 15 & over, freestyle relay comprised of Eli West, Paige Hatfield, and Jed Reed.
Other Piranha standouts were ten-year-old Grace An George and thirteen-year old Summer Hagan. George swam to a sixth place finish in 25 yard freestyle (17.42) and to a fifth place finish in 25 yard butterfly (22.19). Hagan (13) placed third in 50 yard freestyle (28.49), second in 50 yard backstroke (35.56), third in 50 yard butterfly (33.06), and fourth in 100 yard individual medley.
Not to be outdone, Crader also placed third in 50 yard freestyle (32.63), third in 50 yard backstroke (42.15), and second in 50 yard butterfly (37.18). Edwards also raced to second in 50 yard butterfly (28.62) and third in 100 yard individual medley (1:09.33).
The Piranhas officially began practice on June 3, both in and out of the water. Head coach is Kathrine Newton and assistant coach is Eddy Bentley. Junior coaches are Paige Hatfield and Jacob Hatfield.
ETSSL competition continues this Saturday, at the Boys and Girls Club of Nacogdoches.
