JASPER, May 12, 2013-- Dr. Ray Perryman is scheduled to be the special guest speaker at this year’s Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DETCOG) Annual Membership Meeting. The meeting will be held on Thursday, May 23, at the Pitser Garrison Civic Center in Lufkin.
Perryman holds a BS in Mathematics from Baylor University and a PhD in Economics from Rice University. He is the President and CEO of The Perryman Group, an economic research and analysis firm based in Waco, Texas. He is widely known for authoring more than 2,000 trade articles, publishing a subscription forecasting service and a monthly newsletter, writing a syndicated newspaper column, hosting a daily radio commentary, and appearing regularly on National Public Radio. Known for his sense of humor, his official biography says that makes him an obsessive-compulsive workaholic.
Beyond his numerous academic positions and international recognitions, Perryman acknowledges that some of his most gratifying work has been in the field of economic development. His work is credited as playing a key role in the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs. Perryman is a past recipient of the Outstanding Texas Leader Award and has been honored by the Texas Legislature for his “tireless efforts in helping to build a better Texas.” Most recently, Dr. Perryman has been selected as the 2012 “Texan of the Year” by the Texas Legislative Conference.
Following Dr. Perryman’s speech at DETCOG’s Membership Meeting will be the announcement of the Ralph W. Steen East Texan of the Year Award. The award was named after the beloved Past President of Stephen F. Austin State University, Dr. Ralph W. Steen. It honors an individual who has played a major role in leadership and service to the 12-county region.
