December blood donors can help patients, see Dallas Mavericks basketball

PALESTINE, December 9, 2013-- The most important blood donation is the one that is on the shelf when a patient needs it. Volunteer blood donors are encouraged to remember hospital patients in December, and give the gift of life this month.

Blood donation is free for the giver and it keeps giving to the recipient because it can save lives. Six hundred to 800 patients every day require a blood transfusion and most of them receive more than one unit of blood. Make an appointment on your schedule to give blood in December. It could be the best gift you give this year.

Lowe’s is hosting a blood drive with Carter BloodCare from noon to 4 p.m., Thursday, December 12, at 2715 S. Loop 256 in the parking lot.

December is also ‘Mavs Mania’ month at Carter BloodCare. Those who give blood in December receive a buy one, get one ticket voucher for a game, plus a Mavs tote bag. Go to carterbloodcare.org for more ways you can win a chance to see Mavs basketball.

Potential blood donors can volunteer beginning at age 16 with a parent’s consent, and 17-year-olds can give independently. There is no upper age limit for giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID each time they give. It’s also a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood. For more information about donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call Carter BloodCare at 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
