Deaf, Hard of Hearing workshop slated for July 9

PALESTINE, July 4, 2014— Palestine Resource Center for Independent Living (PRCIL) will host a Deaf and Hard of Hearing workshop at 421 Ave A, Palestine, on Wednesday, July 9, at 1:00 p.m. Jerry Gibson, STAP Specialist for the East Texas Center for Independent Living, East Texas Region 4, will be presenting information about the Specialized Telecommunications Assistance Program (STAP) law.  

The STAP law provides financial assistance for the purchase of specialized assistive equipment to Texas residents having difficulty using the telephone because of any disability. Persons that would benefit from the STAP program are individuals who:

  • Have low vision and cannot see the numbers on a phone
  • Are hard of hearing and need an amplified phone
  • Have mobility issues and need a special phone to accommodate their needs
  • Have speech impairments and need equipment to talk for them
  • Are deaf and require a TTY or text pager
  • Have cognitive or memory difficulties
