TYLER, January 17, 2014— The world-renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem will grace the stage at The University of Texas at Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center, Susan Thomae-Morphew, Cowan Center executive director, announced.
A Braithwaite Performing Arts Program jointly presented by the UT Tyler Cowan Center and East Texas Symphony Orchestra, the dance company will take the stage at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 23.
Tickets are $62, $57, $52, $42, $37 and $27 and can be purchased at the UT Tyler Cowan Center box office by calling 903.566.7424 or online at www.cowancenter.org. Box office hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
“We presented this company to an adoring full house ten years ago, and we’re thrilled to have them back. This is a unique, neo-classical ballet company that always brings you a surprise of jazzy fun,” said Thomae-Morphew.
A leading dance institution of unparalleled global acclaim, the Dance Theatre of Harlem was founded in 1969, by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook. The New York Times called it one of ballet’s most exciting undertakings.
Shortly after the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mitchell started a school that would offer children, especially those in Harlem, the opportunity to learn about dance and the allied arts.
Now in its fourth decade, Dance Theatre of Harlem has grown into a multi-cultural dance institution with an extraordinary legacy and unprecedented success. It brings innovative and bold new forms of artistic expression to audiences across the country and around the world.
Each component of Dance Theatre of Harlem carries a solid commitment towards enriching the lives of young people and adults.
