The City of Palestine has announced ...
VAN ZANDT, February 17, 2014— Andy Flowers, president of the Van Zandt County Crime Stoppers, is asking concerned citizens of the county to consider serving on the Crime Stoppers board to help the organization gain more visibility and do more to help fight crime.
Flowers said he would like to add at least six members to the Crime Stoppers board, which now has nine members. The board meets once a month to determine cash rewards for anonymous tips that have led to arrests of criminals, and occasionally takes part in local festivals and events to get its crime-stopping message out to the public.
"What Crime Stoppers is doing is very valuable work, and we have helped local authorities make hundreds of arrests since this organization has been in place," Flowers said. "We want to make sure we have a high level of citizen involvement, and we want to be able to do more to reach out to the public on a regular basis."
Anyone interested in considering membership on the Crime Stoppers board is urged to call Flowers at 903-848-0163.
Van Zandt County Crime Stoppers offers two anonymous options – phone calls and online tip reporting – for people who want to obtain rewards of up to $1,000 by providing information that helps police or sheriff's deputies make arrests. Funds for rewards and operations of the organization come from court and jury fees and from donations.
Tipsters can call 903-567-STOP (567-7867) or submit a tip through the vanzandtcrimestoppers.org website via their computer or mobile phone. Every tip receives a special code number, and when an arrest is made and a reward approved by the Crime Stoppers board, the tipster can call the tip line again for instructions on how to collect the cash reward.
The group also named its officers for 2014. Flowers, of Canton, is president; Kathy Smith of Grand Saline is vice president; J Ethridge of Mabank is secretary; and Kristine Tanzillo of Myrtle Springs is treasurer.
