Brookshire Grocery Co. to reward Carter BloodCare donors with free food

TYLER, August 21, 2013-- For more than two decades Brookshire Grocery Co. (BGC) has supported the East Texas blood supply by hosting blood drives, educating the community about blood donation and generously rewarding blood donors. Just in time to close out the summer and welcome Labor Day weekend, Brookshire Grocery Co. will host community blood drives across three different East Texas stores.

“We encourage our employees and customers to remember that one single blood donation can help save up to three lives,” said Rebecca Sanders, public relations director, BGC.

Summer, holidays and weekends are the most challenging seasons to maintain the community’s blood supply. Donors are fewer in number and the need for blood by local hospitals is higher than usual.

Brookshire’s stores across East Texas invite the community to give back during the Labor of Love blood drives. As a token of appreciation, every blood donor who participates during one of the blood drives listed below will receive a free Sadler’s Smokehouse sliced brisket or pork loin. This exemplifies BGC’s mission to provide great food and a great shopping experience. In addition, every donor will be registered for a chance to win a gas grill sponsored by East Texas Radio Group and Pratt Modular Homes. The blood drives will operate from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at all the following area locations:

White Oak – Brookshire’s Food Store, 200 W. Highway 80. Wednesday, Aug. 28

Palestine – Brookshire’s Food Store, 2107 S. Loop 256, Thursday, August 29

Tyler – Brookshire’s Food Store, 2020 Roseland Blvd., Friday, August 30

Tyler – Brookshire’s Food Store, 100 Rice Rd., Saturday, August 31

Potential blood donors can volunteer beginning at age 16 with a parent’s consent, and 17-year-olds can give independently. There is no upper age limit for giving. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID each time they give. It’s also a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood.
