Godspell started as a college project at Carnegie Mellon University and was then rescored by Stephen Schwartz for an off-Broadway production in 1971 that became a long-running success. This was period where traditional Broadway rules were being broken, and in this case, with an ensemble cast portrayed by the youth of the time.

Schwartz is also the Grammy- and Academy-winning composer of the Broadway hits Wicked and Pippin.
