TYLER, May 8, 2014—Students and faculty at Boulter Middle School will participate in a special walk-a-thon Friday, May 9, to honor and celebrate Bre’Shauna Washington, a Boulter sixth grader who is battling terminal cancer. The event named “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” is presented by the sixth grade English, Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) department and will begin at 9 a.m., at the Boulter campus, 2626 Garden Valley Road.

Walking Schedule:

  • Community Members: 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
  • 6th Grade Students: 9:00 a.m. to 10:10 a.m.
  • 7th Grade Students: 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  • 8th Grade Students: 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Registration is $1 per walker and all walkers are asked to collect pledges from the community. Participants who reach their pledge goal of $100 will receive a free event T-shirt and goodie bag. Event T-shirts are also available for purchase through the school and donations will be accepted in the front office.

“Bre’Shauna’s faith is astonishing and we want to do all we can to support her in her fight against cancer,” Jo DeMoville, Boulter AVID coordinator, said.

Bre’Shauna was first diagnosed two years ago with lymphoblastic lymphoma, or t-cell lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. After intense chemotherapy followed by a brief period of improvement, the cancer returned this past March. Bre’Shauna is a Boulter cheerleader and member of both the National Junior Honor Society and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and she is loved by everyone in the Boulter family.
