LUFKIN, April 11, 2014— The Texas Experiential Resources Association (TERA) recently named the Challenge Course – a.k.a. the Ropes Course – at Angelina College its Program of the Year for “providing a quality program that uniquely serves a variety of groups.”
Voting for the award originated from peer programs throughout the state of Texas and from Arkansas.
According to AC instructor Sabrina Collins, the award comes with several privileges, including displaying the TERA drum for a full year; a plaque commemorating the honor; and a scheduled “Play Day” at which AC will host a workshop and demonstration for program operators from around the state.
AC president Dr. Larry Phillips said, “In addition to the number of students at AC using the course, 13 different community groups and organizations with nearly 400 participants used our Ropes Course last year by making reservations through our Community Services Division.”
Some of those organizations included the Lufkin Fire Department, the Junior League of Lufkin and ADAC, along with several school districts and churches.
Collins said students from her six Interpersonal Communications classes, along with AC instructor Patty Donaldson’s Challenge Course Physical Education courses, use the Ropes Course throughout each semester in order to build both confidence and teamwork among participants.
“I would just like to take this opportunity to express appreciation for the ongoing support of our Challenge Course program,” Collins said. “I would also like to thank Steve Capps (AC Physical Plant Director) and his men for taking care of the course and for working with our needs to ensure the course is well maintained and safe.
“Additionally, I would like to recognize our team of facilitators that work on the course. Lisa Wise is an exceptional Coordinator and works very hard with our facilitators and on maintaining our course. Patty (Donaldson) has developed a quality Physical Education class that gives our students a marketable skill, and all of our CC staff are such hard workers and are very passionate about what they do. We would not have received this award without everyone's support and hard work.”
