Angelina College Bands performing Spring Concert March 25

LUFKIN, March 22, 2014— The Angelina College Swinging Roadrunner Jazz Band and the ACC Big Band will again jam together on the stage of AC’s Hudgins Hall at 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, March 25, in the bands’ annual spring concert.

Director Larry Greer leads the program, with his musicians resurrecting selections contained in the Great American Song Book; from contemporary music and jazz standards, as well as big band standards immortalized by legendary performers.

Greer, a music instructor for AC’s Fine Arts Division, assembles his unique blend of college musicians as each semester progresses, measuring their talents to see just where they fit into the Swinging Roadrunner Combo. He then showcases those talents in fall and spring concerts that have become one of the area’s most popular musical attractions.

Guest vocalists for this year’s performance include Karen Greer, Valencia Edner and Patty Donaldson.

The Swinging Roadrunners’ tentative program – with the possibility of an impromptu jam session breaking out at any time – includes “Watermelon Man” (H. Hancock), “Bye Bye Blackbird” (R. Henderson), “Song for My Father” (H. Silver), “On Green Dolphin Street” (B. Kaper), “Blue Moon” (R. Rogers) and “BB Blues” (J. Abersold).

Performers for the Jazz Band include Allyson McCreary (Colmeseneil), alto sax; MaryJo Carlton (Hudson), tenor sax; Jordan Linstrom (Hudson), bass; Stephen Salas (Lufkin), piano; and Austin Roberts (Plano), drum set.

The ACC Big Band fills its chairs with both local and student musicians. A 15-piece orchestra, the band is comprised of retired professional musicians, band directors, professionals from other fields and former students playing swing era tunes from the golden years of American music.

The band’s scheduled program includes selections from the following:  “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” (D. Ellington, V. Edner); “Do Nothin’ Till You Hear from Me” (D. Ellington, V. Edner); “Teach Me Tonight” (G. DePaul, L. Greer); “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” (J. Kern, L. Greer); “All of Me” (Simons and Marks, P. Donaldson); “Blue Bossa” (K. Dorham); and “Blues Walk” (C. Brown).

Performers for the ACC Big Band include the following:

Saxophones – Kyle Gavanavitch (lead alto); Michael Parrish (alto); Mike McGowan (lead tenor); Leslie Gunter (tenor); and Bethe Girardi (baritone). Trombones – Jeff Sorey (lead), Robert Shanks, Lavan Watts and Melvin Eckman (bass). Trumpets – Dwain Forsythe (lead), Brad Comeaux, Ricky Gay and Mel Miller.
