PALESTINE, SEPTEMBER 18, 2017 -- On 09/12/2017 at approximately 10:15am, deputies responded to a suspicious person call in the 8900 block of FM 322.

The property owner reported to deputies that his land had somehow caught on fire and he, along with Elkhart VFD were attempting to put it out when he stated a man approached him while he was on his bulldozer attempting to fight the fire. The property owner stated the man looked intoxicated and stated to him that a large pack of dogs was chasing him and he lit the fire to stop them.

When deputies arrived they found the man, identified as Hunter Sheridan (DOB 02/27/1984) still on the property. Sheridan was arrested at the scene and charged with Arson $7,500 bond, Criminal Trespass $2,500 bond, and Public intoxication $300 fine.  The fire damaged several acres of land and is being investigated by the ACSO, the Texas Forestry Service and the State Fire Marshall.
