'Bella Girls' deliver warmth, cheer to Hampton residents

TYLER, December 23, 2013-- A special group of young ladies from Bell Elementary Global Communications Academy recently delivered warmth and cheer to residents of The Hamptons Assisted Living and Memory Care Center in Tyler. Forty-five girls who participate in the school’s Bella Girls program visited with residents and handed out 95 handmade winter scarves and holiday cards.

“It was fun to able to bring happiness to other people that might not get to see their families very often,” fourth-grader, Madisyn Matalema, said.

Serenity Reed, also a fourth-grade student, added, “My favorite part was singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Ms. Hampton, the oldest resident at the Hamptons, on her 98th birthday. It made her day.”

Bella Girls is an after-school learning experience for girls in fourth and fifth grade. The Bella Girls program supports positive self-concepts in preteen girls through education and community service opportunities. During the year, Bella Girls discuss friendships, positive body image, problem-solving, career interests and community service.

“It was such a joy to see our fourth and fifth grade girls interacting with the residents of the Hamptons. I could not have been prouder of them,” Sarah Walker, Counselor at Bell Elementary, said. “The girls were kind, engaging, compassionate and respectful. I think service projects are a great way to teach our students about our community and to expose them to leadership opportunities right here in East Texas. The smiles on the residents’ faces said it all!”
