(KABUL, Afghanistan) -- The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan proposed an additional audit of the preliminary results of the recent Afghan election.
The proposal was presented at a Thursday meeting convened by outgoing Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
The UNAMA proposed an audit of all polling stations with over 595 votes, all female polling stations staffed with male workers, any polling center where a candidate received a vote total that was a multiple of 50, all polling stations added for the run-off, among other qualifying standards.
Such an audit would likely take up to two weeks. The UNAMA says, however, that because the final results have to be announced around July 22, the scope of a potential audit is limited.
Additional auditing could be completed if more time is given, the UNAMA said.
Both candidates, Dr. Ashraf Ghani and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, had requested a full investigation of the fraud allegations in recent weeks.
