(MOSCOW) -- More than 400 Ukrainian troops crossed the Russian border Sunday, seeking refuge in the country due to lack of supplies.
Crews on the eastern border were reportedly surrounded by separatists, blocked in without fuel, food, or ammunition.
The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe facilitated the soldiers' movement into Russia for assistance, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki confirmed Tuesday.
On Monday, half the soldiers returned to Ukraine.
The OSCE is not aware of any soldiers requesting asylum in Russia, even as President Vladimir Putin continues to insist there are hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian asylum seekers in the region.
