(WASHINGTON) -- The U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning for Iraq. citing high risk of kidnapping and terrorist violence.
A similar warning was put out by the State Department in March. U.S. citizens in Iraq "remain at high risk," the State Department said. In recent months, numerous attacks have occurred in public gathering places, including cafes and markets.
The U.S. government considers the threat against government personnel in Iraq to be sufficiently serious to require them to live and work under heavy security guidelines. American citizens are advised to avoid the areas near the Syrian, Turkish and Iranian borders, which are particularly dangerous, the State Department said.
Additionally, the U.S. Embassy has only limited ability to provide consular services to Americans in Iraq due to the "security environment."
