iStockphoto/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- The U.S. Department of State issued a new travel warning for Ukraine on Thursday, including the latest information on clashes in Odessa, Ukraine, as well as a violent confrontation between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian protesters late last week.

American citizens are urged to avoid "non-essential" travel to or within Ukraine. Of particular note, the State Department mentioned the Crimean Peninsula and the eastern regions of Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as the city of Odessa, after violent conflicts have created a dangerous environment.

The State Department warns U.S. citizens that the situation in Ukraine is "unpredictable and could change quickly." They are also advised to avoid large crowds.

"Be prepared to remain indoors for extended periods of time should clashes occur [nearby]," the warning states.

The eastern part of Ukraine has been the site of a number of clashes and conflicts in the past months since Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula in March.
