(ROME) -- Pope Francis has a message for young people: Stop wasting time online and with gadgets.
Addressing a crowd of about 50,000 young Germans on a pilgrimage to St. Peter's Tuesday, the pope said spending time online and with smartphones is futile. He said time is a gift from God and that it needs to be used for good and useful actions.
Pope Francis went on to say that technology should simplify and improve the quality of our lives, not be used to distract us with hours of chatting online or watching soap operas.
As the leader of the Catholic church shared his advice, hundreds of young people in the crowd filmed the pope with their smartphones.
The pope himself uses social networks to get his messages across and has more than four million followers on Twitter -- one of the biggest followings in the world.
