(WASHINGTON) -- As the U.S. war in Afghanistan winds down, the number of airdrops over the region has fallen noticeably.
According to data from the U.S. Air Force, there were 1,407 sorties with at least one "weapons release" in 2013. This year, that figure is at 220 through April 30, on pace for just about 660 such airstrikes in 2014.
The overall number of sorties has also dropped significantly. In 2012, there were 28,768 sorties, a figure that dropped to 21,785 last year. This year, the figure stands at 6,042 through the end of April, on pace for just over 18,000.
Even compared to figures from the same time last year, it's clear that U.S. airstrikes are declining in frequency. Through April 2013, there were 1,022 weapon releases, compared to just 414 through this April.
