iStockphoto/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- The National Security Council says that the Iraqi government has welcomed support in combating the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a former al-Qaeda affiliate that's dedicated to establishing a fundamentalist Islamic state in Iraq and Syria.

"We are not going to get into details of our diplomatic discussions, but the government of Iraq has made clear that they welcome our support in their effort to confront ISIL," NSC spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan told ABC News. She did not provide specific details on any potential assistance.

Rebel fighters of the ISIL took the Iraqi city of Mosul on Tuesday. Reports indicate that many troops in the Iraqi army and police uniforms simply dropped their weapons, took off their uniforms and fled. Many of the weapons fell into the hands of the rebels.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki declared a state of emergency and has asked parliament to declare martial law.
