No Signs of Russian Withdrawal at Ukraine Border, White House Says

Mon, 19 May 2014 14:54:59 +0000

iStock/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin claims his troops have finished their military exercises that threatened the Ukrainian border, but Washington doesn't believe it.

A White House official says the U.S. has yet to see any signs of Russian troops moving away from the border. The U.S. has even released satellite images claiming the troops are still there. The official made note that Russia made the same claim six weeks ago that a pullback had been ordered and failed to withdraw.

Russia has insisted it had no plans to invade Ukraine, but the West says tens of thousands of troops had been moved to the border, raising tensions across the region.

The U.S. now wants what it calls "clear firm evidence" that Moscow is backing away before elections take place in Ukraine next weekend.
