Islamic State Still on the Move in Iraq

Mon, 04 Aug 2014 09:42:50 +0000

Hemera/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The situation in Iraq grew more precarious Sunday after two more oil fields were taken over in the north by the militant Islamic State.

The oil fields produce some 30,000 barrels per day, according to the Northern Oil Co.

Since beginning its offensive earlier this summer, Islamic State has taken control of large swaths of northern and western Iraq that includes the Qayyara oil field as well as refineries.

Meanwhile, Kurdish forces have also been overrun by the al Qaeda-splinter group.

During the weekend, militants seized the village of Wana, south of the Mosul dam, as well as the towns of Zummar and Sinjar.
