(WASHINGTON) -- Vice President Joe Biden spoke with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Friday, strongly urging the government to ensure that their fight against terrorism includes the protection of civilians.
Biden congratulated the Iraqi people on their participation in April's parliamentary elections, and emphasized the importance of a new parliament taking action.
The two touched on the security situation in Anbar province, which has been a region of escalating violence, with the Vice President assessing a "holistic approach" that includes political outreach as well as a focus on gaining local support.
Both the prime minister and Biden reaffirmed the two countries' commitment to work together in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which represents a threat to the region, according to the White House.
