Yankees Designate Outfielder Alfonso Soriano for Assignment

Jm McIsaac/Getty Images(MINNEAPOLIS) -- Alfonso Soriano's second tenure with the New York Yankees has come to an end as the team has designated the veteran outfielder for assignment.

"We designated Soriano, which is extremely difficult because he's been a great Yankee and been a great player," manager Joe Girardi said. "We felt we needed some more pitching today, so we called up [Bruce] Billings. Bullpen has been extremely taxed."

Soriano had been productive last season when the team acquired him from the Chicago Cubs. But this season, he's failed to produce much on offense as he batted .221 with six home runs and 23 RBIs.

Soriano is in the final year of an eight-year contract he signed with the Cubs back in 2007 worth $138 million.

The 38-year-old Soriano has made no decisions on his playing future, but could ultimately decide to retire.

If he does call it quits, he leaves behind a 16-year career that saw him hit 412 home runs, 1,159 RBIs, and 289 stolen bases.
