Tom Watson: Tiger Must Be Healthy for Ryder Cup

Michael Cohen/Getty Images(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) -- Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson isn't ruling Tiger Woods out next month.

Woods failed to make the cut at the PGA Championship following severe back pains at the WGC Bridgestone Classic and Watson said on Monday he's not ruling him out yet.

"I think it directly comes from Tiger," Watson said. "How he assesses himself. He has a directness to him. I'm direct and he's direct. The main thing is I can't assess his medical condition. And I really can't assess how he is playing. It's really going to have to come from him."

Nine players qualified for the team after the PGA Championship ended on Sunday.

"I don't make this comment loosely," Watson said.  "He is Tiger Woods and he brings a lot to the team if he has the ability to play and he is healthy. He brings a lot to the team. And I would be a fool not to consider him."

The United States last won the Ryder Cup in 1999, but Watson believes that the American's are catching up to the European players and said that they'll be a threat to win the Ryder Cup.

"I think the European team is the stronger of the teams right now, on paper," Watson said. "But I have extreme confidence in the players that we have on our team and their motivation to go out and win the cup back. It doesn't leave me any question that we're capable of winning the cup."
