(DETROIT) -- Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer (14-4) struck out 14 batters as the Detroit Tigers (65-54) beat the Pittsburgh Pirates (64-57) 5-2 on Thursday. The righthander tossed 121 pitches over eight scoreless frames, allowing just three hits and two walks.
Outfielder J.D. Martinez led the offensive attack for the Tigers, going two-for-three with a homer and two RBIs. Third baseman Nick Castellanos contributed to the winning effort with two hits and two RBIs.
Pirates starter Francisco Liriano (3-9) allowed two earned runs, three hits and four walks while striking out nine across six innings of work.
Pittsburgh travels to Washington to take on the Nationals in a three-game series beginning on Friday, while Detroit will welcome the Seattle Mariners for a three-game weekend series.
