(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) -- The Tampa Bay Rays signed 16-year-old shortstop Adrian Rondon, Baseball America's No. 1 international baseball prospect, for $2.95 million Monday.
In order to make the signing, the Rays, which only had around $2 million in bonus pool money to spend on international prospects, sent pitching prospect Matt Ramsey to the Marlins for their second, third and fourth international bonus slots. Those slots gave the Rays an extra $1,000,800 to use on signing Rondon.
Rondon, who is from the Dominican Republic, is being described as a steady defender who makes solid contact at the plate.
"I'm happy for myself and for my family, and I thank God," Rondon told the Rays' team website. "I'm thankful for the opportunity to sign. It's a dream come true, truthfully, not for the money, but for the chance to compete in the Major Leagues. It's truly going to change my life. I've worked for this every day from 7 [a.m.] to 7 at night to have this chance. There were many sacrifices."
