Rangers Stay Alive, Top Kings 2-1 in Game 4 of Stanley Cup Final

Thu, 12 Jun 2014 05:09:55 +0000

Paul Bereswill/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Henrik Lundqvist made 40 saves to help the New York Rangers stay alive by beating the Los Angeles Kings, 2-1 Wednesday night, in Game 4 of the NHL Stanley Cup Final.

The Kings lead the best-of-seven series, 3-1.

Lundqvist was great all game, but he did receive some help from his friends. In the first period, Kings defenseman Alex Martinez's shot got past the Rangers goalie and glided across the goal line before Rangers defenseman Anton Stralman cleared the puck from danger. Then with 1:11 left in the game, the puck once again got by Lundqvist, this time stopping dead on the goal line. A tap of the puck would have allowed the Kings to score the game-tying goal, but instead Rangers center Derek Stepan got on the ground and flicked the puck out of harms way, to save the Rangers' season.

"I was just holding my breath," Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi said. "All those guys in the crease did a great job to keep it out."

Benoit Pouliot and Martin St. Louis both scored for the Rangers, which have now won and NHL-record eight straight home games when facing elimination.

Dustin Brown scored the lone goal for the Kings.

Game 5 is Friday in Los Angeles. The puck is scheduled to drop at 8 p.m. Eastern.
