The 37-year-old Pierzynski was signed by the Cardinals Saturday to help replace catcher Yadier Molina, who tore a ligament in his right thumb July 9.

Pierzynki had played 72 games for the Boston Red Sox this season before being released 10 days ago.

Matt Adams led the Red Birds with four RBIs, two of them coming off a triple in the seventh to put St. Louis on top for good.

The win snaps the Cardinals (55-48) four-game losing streak and keeps them three games behind Milwaukee for first place in the NL Central.
