(NATAL, Brazil) -- Oribe Peralta scored off a rebound in the 61st minute to lift Mexico past Cameroon 1-0, in pouring rain Friday, in both teams Group A World Cup opener.
Mexico scored when Giovani Dos Santos' shot deflected off Cameroon goalie Charles Itandje and Peralta nailed a left-footed shot into the back of the net.
Mexico's head coach Miguel Herrera decided to start Peralta in place of striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, one of Mexico's most popular players. Before the goal, Mexican fans were cheering for Hernandez to be put in the game.
Earlier in the match, three goals were disallowed. The first came in the 10th minute when Dos Santos netted a cross from Hector Herrera but Dos Santos was ruled offside. Cameroon's Eric Choupo-Moting found the back of the net a short time later but he too was ruled offside.
Dos Santos had another goal taken away due to being offside in the first half when he gained control of the ball off a corner and fired it past Itandje.
This is Mexico's first win over an African team.
