(AKRON, Ohio) -- Rory McIlroy hit three straight birdies on his first three holes to erase a three shot deficit on the final day of the World Golf Championship Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday. It was the second straight tournament win for McIlroy, who regained the top spot on the world golf ranking.
McIlroy entered the day trailing Sergio Garcia by three strokes, but opened Sunday's round with three consecutive birdies to tie Garcia, who bogeyed to give McIlroy the lead. His impressive play continued throughout the day, finishing with a 4-under 66 to capture his first World Golf Championship. Garcia finished second behind McIlroy, much like he did two weeks ago at the British Open.
Marc Leishman finished third while Patrick Reed finished fourth.
Tiger Woods was forced to withdraw from competition after re-injuring his surgically repaired back. The injury came on the second hole when he landed in a sand trap after using an awkward stance to attempt a shot. Woods attempted to play through but eventually withdrew on the ninth hole and needed assistance leaving the course.
Woods was not certain whether or not he will compete at the PGA Championship next week in Louisville. McIlroy will be looking for his third straight win and his second Major title this year.
