Matt Cain's Season Likely Over

Sat, 02 Aug 2014 18:00:00 +0000

Jason O. Watson/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain has bone chips in his pitching elbow and will likely need season ending surgery.

As of Friday afternoon, Cain was still questioning whether to have surgery now or after the season, but Giants skipper Bruce Bochy doesn't seem to think the right-hander will be back in 2014.

"Chances are, if you're putting odds on it, the odds are not going to be that he will pitch," Bochy said.

The 29-year-old Cain is having one of the worst seasons of his career. He's thrown 90 1/3 innings, compiling a 2-7 record, 4.18 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 70 strikeouts.
