Martin Kaymer Leads At U.S. Open At Five Under

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(PINEHURST, N.C.) -- Martin Kaymer shot an opening round 5-under 65 at the U.S. Open championship on Thursday to take a three-stroke lead over Graeme McDowell, Kevin Na, Fran Quinn and Brendon de Jonge.

Kaymer had six birdies and just one bogey on the day. He seized the lead on the back nine with birdies on the 14th, 16th and 17th hole.

Phil Mickelson, in search of his first U.S. Open championship, finished the day at even-70, five shots behind Kaymer. The five-time major championship winner had three birdies and three bogeys on the day.

Defending champion Justin Rose completed the first round at two-over 70, after bogeying the 8th, 13th, 14th, 17th, and 18th hole.
