Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez Sent to DL

Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(MIAMI) -- Starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Miami Marlins Friday due to right shoulder inflammation.

The 24-year-old Alvarez is having a career season, pitching 137 2/3 innings, compiling an 8-5 record, 2.48 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 83 strikeouts while making his first All-Star team.

This is not the first time that Alvarez has been on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. In 2013, the Venezuelan started the year on the DL with the same injury and didn't return until July 4th.

"I don't know if it is in the same spot or the same type of pain he had last year," Marlins skipper Mike Redmond said. "We're going to get him checked out and make sure that we get him healthy. Hopefully we caught it early enough so it's not a huge deal."

The DL move is retroactive to Wednesday.

Jacob Turner will start in Alvarez's place Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds.
