Carlyle agreed on a two-year extension with the club, but assistants Dave Farrish, Gren Cronin and Scott Gordon will not return.

"In Randy, we know we have a leader who has enjoyed a high level of success as both a player and a coach, including a Stanley Cup championship," Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis said in a statement. "It was important that the positives brings to our team were not overshadowed by a finish to the season that we must all take responsibility for."

It was a mixed season for the Maple Leafs this year. Even though the team was at one point as high as second in the Atlantic Division, they went 2-12 in their final 14 games and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

Carlyle has been with the Maple Leafs since the 2011-2012 season.
