(SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.) -- What was feared true has now become fact. Miami Marlins ace pitcher Jose Fernandez will have season-ending Tommy John surgery on Friday.
The announcement came prior to Miami's game at San Francisco by manager Mike Redmond. "Our focus is to get him back," he added. "I'm glad he's having it done and starting his recovery process. Obviously it's a big blow for us."
Fernandez is expected to miss 12 to 18 months following the procedure.
The 21-year-old was put on the disabled list last week after struggling in an outing against San Diego.
The Marlins' righty was 4-2 on the season with a 2.44 earned run average in eight starts. Fernandez led the league with 70 strikeouts after winning the National League's Rookie of the Year award in 2013.
